Experiencing the empty nest syndrome, this family has decided to downsize into a smaller home.

History Related: to the custom built "Extreme Makeover" home!!! In the summer of 2005 Kevin and Cathy Nutsch and their five daughters were miles away on vacation enjoying the Ozarks when on August 9th, 2005, when their lives were devastated by a blast caused by a propane leak touched off by a spark. The resulting explosion was heard over three miles away. The blast reduced years of memories, photographs and irreplaceable mementos into the contents of three dumpsters.

Several friends, and a stranger who heard the Nutsch’s story, nominated them for a ABC's "Extreme Makeover."

Ty Pennington, design team leader and carpenter is perhaps the most famous of the cast. He leads a team that includes designers Paul DiMeo, Paige Hemmis, Michael Moloney, Constance Ramos, Ed Sanders, Preston Sharp, Edurardo Xol, and Tanya McQueen. Wichita Roofing and Remodeling is serving as general contractor of the project but over 100 companies including several from Rose Hill, have joined together, donating supplies, manpower and recruiting volunteers or this labor of love.

In four and a half days, thousands of volunteers from Rose Hill, Wichita, and throughout Kansas, along with the Extreme Home Makeover team, will completely rebuild the Nutsch home. Decorate it, furnish it and complete the landscaping. Doug Easton, project logistics coordinator from Wichita Roofing and Supply explained that “one hour of this project equals one day in a regular home build.” The contractors and volunteers will work 24 hours a day until the home is completed.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius took the stage before McBride to thank the people of Kansas for their outpouring of love for this family. McBride echoed the sentiments “We help each other out in Kansas. It’s one of the values I was brought up with.”

McBride went on to sing several songs including a beautiful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for the people of Kansas and Happy Birthday to Pennington, who turns 40 on Wednesday, October 18.

With the countdown to completion begun, the hedgerow was removed, pond dug and foundations poured. A public area has been provided at the construction site for anyone wishing to watch the progress.
