SALINA, KS 67401

DIRECTIONS: From East Iron Avenue and Ohio go west approximately ½ mile to Auction. (Turn north right before bridge) follow long driveway to property.

OPEN HOUSE: Sunday, May 30th 2-6 PM

REAL ESTATE SELLS AT: NOON 12:00

ESTATE OF: Dr. Ray & Babette (Babs) Freeman

History related to 1901 East Iron Avenue Salina Kansas
FAMILY HISTORY:
It seems like at least half of Salina knew the old county doctor, Dr. Ray Freeman, and his wife Babs (Stiefel) Freeman. They called the house at 1901 East Iron Ave their home for almost 40 years, since moving there in 1971. And the grounds and outbuildings were home to a countless parade of dogs, cats, goats, chickens, horses, and even the odd raccoon. Over the years they had lots of guests, birthday parties, and family holiday dinners. They used a retired human baby incubator to warm up ailing chicks and puppies. They loved people and animals, prominently displaying a humorous sign in the kitchen that read, “This property is maintained for the comfort and security of our animals. If you don't like that, go away !”

Ray was literally the old country doctor, a pediatrician who helped thousands of children in Saline County battle everything from the common cold to heartbreaking cancers, while concurrently calming thousands of worried parents with a serene bedside manner. That work included an untold number of house calls, hospital visits, and prescriptions of his own special diaper rash cure. Even though Ray has passed on, you can still still get a jar of Freeman's Ointment from local druggists. Ray moved to Salina in 1959 from his native Denver after graduating from Yale's wartime class of 1943 and WW2 duty in the Pacific as a Marine, which cemented in him the drive to become a medical doctor. He spent the post-war years in Denver picking up premed classes before studying medicine at the University of Colorado, residency in Kansas City, and returning to practice at Denver's Children's Hospital. After a divorce he wanted a fresh start, a new city, so he said yes to the call of Salina's Mowery Clinic, who wanted to add a new pediatrician to their growing practice. It was a great opportunity in more ways than one. In the odd twists and turns through which life sometimes takes us, moving to Salina lead to romance for Ray.

Romance bloomed in the doctor’s office, accidentally assisted by small children. In 1960, just a year after Ray moved to Salina, the former Babs Stiefel moved back to her hometown of Salina. She was a Korean war widow of another native Salinian, Lt. Ralph Smith. It was late summer and her two sons needed pre-elementary school physicals. So she did what many moms might do; she read aloud the names of the local pediatricians and let the kids choose one. She immediately regretted giving her kids the vote, because they agreed that “Dr. Freeman sounds nice.” Babs did not agree with that. She had first met Ray a week earlier at a party and had not liked him at all. But like a good mom she took her medicine, taking the kids to that nice Dr. Freeman. Ray's charm was more winning this time. He asked her out and by the next April they were happily married for 45 wonderful years, until he died in 2006.

Babs family has a long, 4-generation, history in Salina dating back to August Bondi who first arrived in Salina on horseback at 6 in the morning of July 22, 1866 after riding with John Brown in the years leading up to the Civil War. He later became the city's first postmaster in 1894. In the next generation one of August and Henrietta Bondi's nine children, Minnie Ester Bondi married Sigmund Stiefel of Hochauaen, Germany, who in partnership with his brother, Moses, founded a Salina retail institution, the Stiefel Store, in January 1904. Sig and Minnie had two children, Henrietta and Frankl. Frankl and his wife Maxine Hartzel Stiefel of Youngstown, Ohio brought Babs (Babette) into the world just months before the crash of 1929. Another well-known Salinan, Milton Stiefel, whose generous donation made the renovation of the Stiefel Theater possible, was the son of the other Stiefel store founder, Moses. Four generations of Salina history ticked on when Babs passed away in September 2009.
